The scaly fin is a gray colour. When they are young, they have a thin blue line round the tail.

 

The adult is about 12 centimetres long.

If you get too close to their eggs they will try to bite you!

 

The scaly fin is scaly and rough.

It lives alone or in schools in rocky reefs in NSW,  VIC and SA.

 

It's omnivorous and eats algae, echinoderms,worms and crustaceans.

At Greenpatch in water about three metres deep I saw a scaly fin hiding in rocks staring at me. It was very small and had a blue stripe on top. It was in a spot where there was not a lot of seaweed.
